Tabitha Bianca Brown is a young artist that specializes in a Afro-Retro Minimalist style, often working with Mixed Media and favoring simplicity of complexity. Her color schemes are often simple, yet effect. I love her work and you can click one of her drawings overhead to see more from her. Mind you, to see the multiplicity of her works, you might have to do a bit of digging as she uploads her artworks on blogs and various online shops, as well as deviantart. I recommend entering “thepairabirds” into a search engine for the best results.

Steven Lopez, a painter and remarkable talent that I heard of through a few music blogs actually. I came upon this star through some of his more recent artwork, such as drawing a portrait of Soul Songbird Erykah Badu. Per usual, the art I’m uploading has some Afrocentric themes of some sort. However, some of the pieces are more Abstract than others, working with Afro-Futuristic themes I’d say. With that said, check this man out now by clicking the image.

Souther Salazar, I could go on about his work but i think this...

Souther Salazar, I could go on about his work but i think this quote does it exceptionally well.

“Salazar’s two-dimensional pieces incorporate mixed-media collage techniques often mirrored in his three-dimensional work, which transforms the surrounding environment, pulling viewers into the picture plane to further explore his representational world. Salazar’s highly imaginative installations are the physical embodiment of the subject matter found in his whimsical paintings. His carefully crafted sculptures feature tiny civilizations of baked-clay human and animal figures living within cities constructed using a variety of found objects. Inventively recycling every-day materials into his medium—Salazar transforms ordinary items such as pencils, bottle caps, thread spools, matchbooks, and tin cans into robots, dinosaurs, and transportation vehicles—converting light bulbs into hot-air balloons while glue dispensers and asthma inhalers become flying rockets and space ships.” -quote taken from The Jonathan Levine Gallery

Her works, mostly painted in soft pastels on panels of wood, are playful and surreal. a quote one of her art shows website states, “Imaginary furry animals and floral patterns emerge from the grains found on the panels of wood that line the walls of Amy Sol’s Las Vegas studio. They become companions to the breathtakingly soft and sweet female characters that inhabit her work.” This is a perfect explanation of her work. the color schemes she uses are unique and give you a feeling of calming companionship.

Best known as a painter and drawer, she often depicts nude girls in works that are sexually driven while remaining cute. The childlike manner in which the art is presented is akin to the Lolicon movement in Japan today.

Her aesthetic is clear and there is a definite style and form to her characters that sets her apart from simply anime or chibi. Her lines are rough and bountiful and their alienated large eyes stare back at us.

Well, considering I didn’t want to waste money buying a museum ticket, I just looked at one of the exhibitions at Kendall at the time. There was one piece I decided to do by Sam Weber. It is not the piece above, to me, it was far less intriguing. But the piece that I did see, prompted me to look at his other works, which I have found recently to be far more beautiful than the one piece I saw in one of the galleries at Kendall.

The piece above is Sam Weber’s “The Nostalgist” and he explains it in very few words, “A dead child is reconstructed.”

All cut from black paper by the able hand of Kara Elizabeth Walker, an Emancipated Negress and leader in her Cause”

Kara Walker, one of the most dynamic Contemporary African-American artists, has been known to address sexism, racism, slavery, and a number of other common themes found in African-American literature and artwork. However, her style is best noted for the usage of silhouettes to express an idea, perhaps hinting that we are merely shadows at play in a Platonic Cave. Or Not, maybe I’m bullshitting. Regardless, I am a fan of her artwork. While I was in school in the Bay Area, I was introduced to her artwork and her famous silhouettes are forever dancing in my mind.

If you want to see more of her artwork, click on the piece above.
